Summer Youth Service Project Opportunities!
The New Community Coalition in cooperation with Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is seeking 14-15 year old youth in San Miguel River Watershed – (San Miguel and West Montrose Counties) to participate in SCC’s Community Corps Program for two weeks this summer!!!
Beginning June 29-July 9 Monday–Thursday (8 days) students will participate in educational outdoor service projects.
Program Overview: Community Corps Triad Program: Southwest Community Corps incorporates three key components: work, service, and learning. The program is designed to introduce 14 and 15 year olds to the values of work, service and learning in the local community and beyond. By practicing a good work and service ethic, participants develop new skills and resources of human power and self confidence. Each participant commits to doing conservation work for the community, service projects for local organizations, and learning about the community and the environment through hands-on place-based education.
Position Title: Crew Member
Dates: June 29- July 2 & June 6-9, 2009
Days/Times: Monday – Thursday (8 days) 8:00-4:00.
Location: Telluride, Norwood and areas located in the San Miguel River Watershed.
Benefits: FUN, meet and work with friends, work outside, learn new skills, training provided, plus Service Completion Award.
Award: $175.00 Service Completion Award.
Commitment: Need to commit to 2 weeks – 8 days.
Ages: 14 -15 year olds.
Supervised by: Two SCC trained crew leaders who are environmental educators with wilderness first responder certification, TNCC staff and local experts.
Projects May Include: Forest health projects, food and farming projects, park maintenance, weatherization, trail maintenance, community beautification, tree planting, weeding, landscaping and other mission related projects.
Program Goals:
* Engage 14 -15 year olds in team-based service that meets community needs.
* Provide youth with rewarded work, service, education and personal growth opportunities.
* Build civic pride by engaging youth in service projects that have direct impact on their communities.
* Meet maintenance and project needs on community lands by engaging local youth as a workforce.
* Model change through effective work.
