The Green Gondola Campaign
The gondola is one of Colorado's busiest public transportation systems. Linking Telluride with the Town of Mountain Village, it transports more than two million passengers over the San Sophia ridge each year.
This great system comes with a cost - the gondola is a large user of electricity. Annually, it uses more than 2.3 million KWh, or nearly 5% of Mountain Village's total electrical demand. It's the largest load in the region.
The Green Gondola Campaign aims to offset 20% of this load with power from clean, Colorado sunshine. By installing 250 KW of solar panels on Town of Mountain Village structures, the Green Gondola Campaign will generate more than 450,000 KWh each year - a powerful step to meeting the Colorado CAP goal and the Telluride Renewed mayoral challenge.
The Green Gondola Campaign will use tax deductible donations to install 250 KW of solar panels on-site. The electricity generated is used right here. The emissions reduced by the solar panels (more than 430 metric tons of CO2 each year) are exchanged for each donation. That means you can apply the emissions reduction to your own carbon footprint.
How does it work?
Your donation goes into the Green Gondola Fund. Installation of 250 KW of solar panels begins in phases once specific fundraising goals are met. The first installation is scheduled for October, 2010.
Your donations are tax deductible. You can leverage your tax dollar behind a cause you care about. Additionally, every dollar you give is exchanged for the equivalent emissions reduction, a reduction you can apply to your own carbon footprint.
To reduce one ton of CO2 from the atmosphere with Colorado sunshine, donate $314 to the Green Gondola Campaign. TNCC and the Town of Mountain Village will endorse this emissions reduction by issuing you a certificate and window decal. The window decal is suitable for storefront windows or your windshield.
Donate $100 and you will reduce 400 pounds of CO2 from the atmosphere. Donations of $25 reduce 100 pounds of CO2. You will receive a receipt for your tax deduction.
Donate $5, and save 40 pounds from the atmosphere.
Additionally, you or your company can sponsor an individually numbered gondola cabin. Your brand (or your name) will be placed in and on the cabin for up to 20 years. That's a powerful statement, with great brand positioning: more than two million people ride the gondola each year in a very affluent market. Telluride and Mountain Village are unique markets. It's a once in a lifetime brand placement.
