WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
This dynamic session explores the fundamentals of building science and examines the principles of green building. Learn how to minimize costs, conserve resources, increase energy efficiency, and extend building durability. Engage with experts as you follow the systematic process of designing and constructing buildings to incorporate framing, insulating and air sealing techniques to effectively manage heat, air, and moisture flows. In one day at the Building Science and Green Building Seminar, you gain a wealth of knowledge, new industry contacts, and awareness of the latest building advances.
SESSION TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:
> Introduction to Green Building Elements & Why it Matters:
This is a solid introduction to the benefits of implementing better building materials and methods. Includes the common elements of various national and local green building programs.
> Building Science Principles & Why 3rd Party Verification and Testing is Essential:
Reviews building science fundamentals, including topics such as heat, air & moisture flow, and how these principles interact with durability, efficiency and indoor air quality. This segment explores why verification of these building performance standards and other elements is an essential part of the process.
> Water Management and Building Durability:
This section covers the elements of water management on the site from roof to foundation. Learn how critical proper water management is to help alleviate building failure.
> Energy Efficiency – Thermal Envelope and HVAC Improvements:
This segment shows participants how to take advantage of building science principles to improve thermal efficiency, and to reduce the size of HVAC equipment needed to condition indoor spaces.
> Indoor Environmental Quality:
This segment provides participants with important information about the basics of indoor environmental quality and how it relates to green building. Learn how to control pollutants with respect to material choices, and ventilation strategies.
> Material and Resource Use:
This segment covers all aspects of reusing, recycling and use of local materials by highlighting common industry practices and waste stream generation. Includes case study examples from successful projects across the country.
> ENERGY STAR® for New Homes Compliance & Field Demonstration:
The ENERGY STAR for New Homes compliance requirements will be integrated throughout the classroom session, along with a second ½ day segment which will take attendees to two home sites (one finished home and the other at frame stage), where they will view first hand some of the principles learned in the classroom. Some points which will be covered in the field will include: Thermal Bypass Checklist, proper flashing/water management techniques, diagnostics (blower door, duct blast, flow hood and IR Camera use).
TRAINER:
Our trainer, Justin Wilson, President of Building Performance Solutions, Inc. (BPS) is a highly experienced and renowned building science and green building speaker, trainer & consultant, both locally and nationally. He brings over a decade of hands-on building experience, and a unique set of skills to the industry.
